Plankton tow net - First introduced in 1846, these are often considered the most functional and versatile of all plankton collectors. They are usually towed by boats at speeds of 1-3 knots. They consist of a single support hoop, towing bridle, filtration net and straining bucket.

• Simplest sampling method is vertical sampling, where a short haul is made and nets are generally small in size (1:3 mouth to net length ratio, for instance).
• Horizontal sampling occurs over a much longer course. You must select equipment in terms of mouth diameter, diameter/ length ratio, mesh, cable depressor etc.
• Freshwater applications involve a small/medium net (5”- 12” diameter) and often employ vertical hauls.
• Oceanographic applications need a large /extra large net (20”-40” diameter) for either vertical or horizontal hauls.

Ideal for horizontal or vertical tows in fresh or salt water. The larger size is good for salt water and large, clear lakes. Attach a 1/8” diameter line to the top and tow slowly, regulating depth by speed. For horizontal sampling, attach our line weight.

• Sleeve at cod holds 426-E15 adaptor with 24 mm (0.76”) plastic threads
• 125 mL polyethylene bottle and connector with hose and pinchcock.
